Xi Jinping to visit North Korea for first time in nearly seven years as China seeks to reinforce ties with Pyongyang

BmChinese leader Xi Jinping is set to visit North Korea next week, marking his first trip to the country in nearly seven years as Beijing moves to strengthen ties with its nuclear-armed neighbor.

The visit, announced by both countries, is scheduled as a two-day state trip beginning Monday. It comes as China seeks to reinforce its strategic influence in the region while North Korea continues expanding its relationships with other partners, including Russia.

In recent years, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has deepened cooperation with Moscow, including sending troops and military equipment to support Russia’s war in Ukraine. At the same time, Pyongyang has also been working to repair and strengthen its relationship with Beijing, its largest trading partner and key source of economic support.

Analysts say the timing of Xi’s visit highlights competing regional dynamics, with China aiming to reaffirm its role as North Korea’s primary ally while Kim balances ties between Beijing and Moscow. The trip is also seen as part of broader efforts by both countries to coordinate positions amid ongoing tensions with the United States and its allies.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the visit is intended to promote regional stability and further develop traditional relations between the two countries, describing the partnership as long-standing and mutually beneficial.

The announcement comes shortly after North Korea unveiled what is believed to be a new uranium enrichment facility. During a visit to the site, Kim pledged to expand his country’s nuclear capabilities, signaling continued advancement of its weapons program.

North Korea has long faced international sanctions over its nuclear and missile development, and tensions remain high over its push to be recognized as a nuclear-armed state. Experts say Pyongyang may be seeking greater leverage in any future negotiations with the United States, potentially in exchange for sanctions relief.

Kim’s nuclear program has continued to expand since high-level diplomacy with Washington collapsed in 2019. While there have been occasional signals from the United States expressing interest in renewed talks, North Korea has insisted that sanctions and disarmament demands must be dropped before negotiations can resume.

Xi’s visit will be closely watched for any statements on North Korea’s nuclear status, as well as signals about how firmly China aligns itself with Pyongyang on the issue.

The two leaders last met in Beijing in September, where they pledged closer cooperation. Kim had traveled there to attend a military parade alongside other global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

China and Russia, both permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, have previously resisted efforts to tighten sanctions on North Korea, arguing against measures they view as isolating the country.

Xi’s trip is relatively rare, as the Chinese leader has significantly reduced overseas travel since the COVID-19 pandemic. His most recent international visit was to South Korea last fall for a regional summit, where he met with U.S. President Donald Trump.
