 Michelle Obama 'doesn't miss' her daughters after they left home but Barack Obama 'cried' when they went to college

Michelle Obama recently joked about how life has changed since her daughters, Sasha and Malia, left home. On her IMO podcast with Jon Stewart and her brother Craig Robinson, the former First Lady quipped that she doesn’t miss them, even though she loves them dearly and still sees them often. 

She contrasted her reaction with Barack Obama’s, noting that he cried when they went off to college, while she cheerfully said goodbye. Sasha graduated from USC in 2023, and Malia, who finished Harvard in 2021, is now building a career in Hollywood.

Michelle explained that she enjoys the freedom of not worrying about her daughters’ whereabouts on Friday nights, describing their independence as a relief rather than a loss. 

Stewart, who has two children of his own, admitted he misses the structure parenting provided, but Michelle countered that she has plenty of meaning in her life and loves her schedule. 

She emphasized that mothers often feel differently than fathers because they spend more time immersed in their children’s lives, and she feels she knows her daughters “inside and out.”

Barack Obama has previously spoken about how emotional it was to drop Malia off at college, likening the experience to “open‑heart surgery.” 

Michelle, however, sees her daughters’ growth as something to celebrate, not mourn. 

For her, the empty‑nest stage is filled with gratitude for the time she’s already had with them and excitement for their futures, while also enjoying the newfound space to focus on her own life and projects.
