 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  Nov Polls: INEC Accredits 94 Media Organisations


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accredited 94 media organizations for the November 11 governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa States.


INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu who stated this in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting with Media Executives, explained that in the next few days, the accredited media organisations would be notified of the date for the collection of the identity cards for their official


Professor Yakubu told the Media Executives that the mock accreditation involving actual voters in designated polling units in the three states conducted by the Commission was successful.


‘’We tested the efficacy of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for both biometric authentication of voters and the upload of result to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).


We have received no adverse report so far and we look forward to improved performance of the BVAS in voter accreditation and result upload in the forthcoming Governorship elections and beyond,’’ he said.


Professor Yakubu also said the Commission would meet with the security agencies for the safety of journalists, technical staff and protection of the equipment being deployed by the media organizations on Election Day and to grant the media unimpeded access to polling and collation locations.


The INEC Chairman urged members of the media to strictly adhere to the ethics of their profession and avoid fake news.
