Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing. Markazi refugee village, designed for 5,000 people, was already hosting more than 2,700 Yemenis and 1,500 Eritreans. More than 100,000 people have also been displaced ins...

World’s Youngest Reigning Monarch , King Oyo, Dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at three, has died at the age of 34.

The monarch reportedly died on Thursday, with the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announcing his death on Friday.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

However, Ugandan media reports quoted a government minister as saying that King Oyo had been critically ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States.

Reacting to the development, Akiiki described the monarch’s death as a major loss to the royal family and the people of Tooro.

He urged members of the kingdom to remain united and calm while mourning the traditional ruler.

King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne in 1995 following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Rukidi III.

He was only three years old at the time, prompting the establishment of a regency to administer the kingdom until he became old enough to assume full royal responsibilities.

The young monarch was formally crowned in 2010 when he turned 18.

His unusual rise to the throne earned him recognition from Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, a title associated with him throughout his reign.

The Tooro Kingdom, also known as Toro, is one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms and is located in the western part of the country.

Although Uganda’s traditional kingdoms do not exercise constitutional political authority under the country’s republican system, they remain influential in preserving cultural heritage and community identity.

King Oyo was the 13th monarch of Tooro, a kingdom established in the early 19th Century.

During his 31-year reign, he became a prominent cultural figure and was associated with initiatives focused on youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness.

Succession secured

Despite the monarch not being officially married, the Tooro Kingdom has said that the royal succession remains secure.

Akiiki disclosed that King Oyo left behind a son who is expected to become his heir.

He said details concerning the identity of the prince would be formally announced at the appropriate time in line with the customs and traditions of the kingdom.

The Tooro monarchy operates under a hereditary succession system.

News of King Oyo’s death has also attracted condolences from other traditional institutions across Uganda, including the Buganda Kingdom, the country’s largest and most influential traditional institution.

The death ends the extraordinary journey of a monarch who inherited the throne as a three-year-old child and grew into one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.

King Oyo’s reign, spanning more than three decades, remains notable for the transition from child monarch to an adult royal figure who played a significant cultural role in contemporary Uganda.
