The Fanti Carnival in Lagos originated in the 19th century, brought by Afro-Brazilian returnees (known as the Aguda or Amaro) who settled on Lagos Island after returning from slavery in Brazil. It began in the 1880s, merging Brazilian Samba culture with local Yoruba traditions, often celebrated by Communities like Lafiaji and Campos.   "Today, I was at the Fanti Carnival at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island and it was a lively showcase of culture, with each group bringing its own colours, choreography and strong sense of identity. It was especially meaningful to see historic communities like Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo, Olowogbowo, Epetedo, and Isale-Eko come together, making the day even more memorable. From the coordinated parades to the music, dance, and vibrant displays by our young people, as well as the energy of the crowd, it was a rich blend of culture and creativity. Today reflects an important part of our heritage that we must continue to preserve and celebr...

A British influencer has tragically died after falling from Spain’s highest bridge. The 26-year-old digital creator, whose name remains undisclosed by the police, fell from the 630ft Castilla-La Mancha bridge in Talavera de la Reina, situated about 90 minutes southwest, at 7:15am on Sunday.

He was with a 24-year-old English companion who was unharmed but left in a state of shock, local police reported. Footage from the scene showed police cordoning off the area where the fall occurred. Police and firefighters arrived swiftly after the accident was reported, but were unable to save him.

A National Police spokesman for Toledo province, which includes Talavera de la Reina, stated: “He was about 40 to 50 metres up, around a quarter of the bridge’s total height, when he fell. The cause of the fall is unclear and will be investigated by a local court.”

An investigation source revealed both men were climbing without harnesses or protection. A passing motorist raised the alarm. The surviving companion was initially speechless and remains traumatised, but is no longer at the police station. He faces no criminal charges, though local authorities may consider sanctions.

The Castilla-La Mancha bridge, the highest in Spain and the second-highest in Europe, was the site of the incident. Investigators will examine whether heavy rain in Talavera de la Reina prior to the fall made conditions more slippery. It remains uncertain if the two Brits had come to Spain specifically to film the bridge climb, but they had been using a rental car.

Local councillor Macarena Munoz confirmed the tragedy, emphasising that accessing the bridge is strictly prohibited. “We have made it clear on several occasions that it’s not something that can be done in any circumstances,” she stated. Talavera de la Reina Town Council reiterated this in a statement, confirming the death and stressing the prohibition of climbing the bridge.

The judge and forensic doctor have authorised the removal of the body, which has been taken to a funeral parlour. A post-mortem examination is pending
