 Mozambique army joins manhunt for 1,500 fleeing prisoners Mozambique says a "search operation," backed by the army, is underway to recapture more than 1,500 prisoners that escaped from a Maputo prison on Christmas Day. 150 fugitives have been recaptured as of Wednesday evening. Authorities said the escaped inmates took advantage of the third day of unrest triggered by the controversial confirmation of the long-ruling Frelimo party as the winner of recent elections on Monday, AFP reported. National police chief Bernardino Rafael told a press conference on Wednesday evening that 33 inmates were killed as they tried to escape, with another 15 wounded in clashes with prison staff. A total of 1,534 detainees escaped the high-security prison located about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the capital, said Rafael.  Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Stealing Transformer Coil in Yobe


A 26-year-old man, Nasiru Lawan, has been sentenced to eight years in a correctional facility for stealing a 37kg transformer coil wire valued at approximately N1 million from the Government Girls Unity College, Damaturu, Yobe State.


Lawan was charged on October 11, 2024, by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), with two counts of tampering with and stealing transformer coil wire in case No: FHC/DM/CR/40/2024.


The prosecution, led by Barrister Jidda Abdulqadir, presented compelling evidence and testimonies from NSCDC’s intelligence and investigation department, leading to Lawan's conviction. Lawan and an accomplice, still at large, vandalized the school's transformer on September 8, 2024. He was arrested the following day while trying to sell the stolen copper coil wire.


In her sentencing, Justice Fadima Murtala-Aminu condemned the actions of vandals, labeling them as saboteurs of the state's economic and social welfare. She also called for greater collaboration among security agencies to combat vandalism and other criminal activities in the state.
