Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju-Ken Ohanenye, on Wednesday said she has no regrets over some actions she took as minister. Since her appointment in August 2023, Ohanenye has been marred by controversy in office, including her threat to sue the United Nations (UN) for allegedly mismanaging funds meant for Nigeria. She was fired by President Bola Tinubu on October 23, alongside four other ministers at the time – Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Jamila Bio Ibrahim (Youth Development), Tahir Mamman (Education) and Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo (Housing and UrbanDevelopment). FCT POLICE APPREHENDED A CATHOLIC PRIEST AFTER FOOD DISTRIBUTION LED TO THE DEATH OF 10 PEOPLE. (PHOTO).

The FCT Police Command has apprehended the priest of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, where a stampede resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals during a free food distribution event on Saturday.

Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, confirmed the arrest of the parish priest and noted that other church officials involved in organizing the tragic charity event have also been detained by security forces.

This action follows an order from Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for a comprehensive investigation into the stampedes that occurred in Abuja, Anambra, and Oyo States within the same week.

In his Christmas message on Wednesday, Kaigama responded to the arrests and detentions, criticizing what he called the "verbal demonization of the Catholic Church by certain government agents" in relation to the tragedy at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama.

The Archbishop expressed that the detention of the priest and church officials, along with the threat of criminal charges against the church, is "uninspiring, unfriendly, and a misplaced zeal," raising questions about the intentions behind these actions.

In his message titled "Christmas: A Season of Hope and Renewal," Kaigama urged government officials to concentrate on assisting the organizers and the church in coping with their trauma rather than exacerbating the situation.
