MUMBAI POLICE HAVE REGISTERED A CASE AGAINST A MAN FOR ALLEGEDLY DIVORCING HIS WIFE BY SAYING "TRIPLE TALAQ".(PHOTO).

Mumbai police have registered a case against a 31-year-old man for allegedly divorcing his 25-year-old wife by saying “triple talaq.”

The incident took place on Tuesday when the man reportedly contacted his wife’s father to declare the divorce. He claimed he took the decision because his wife was “going alone for a walk.”

The practice of instant divorce, commonly referred to as “triple talaq,” has been criminalised under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. The man has been booked under this law, along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Police officials stated that such actions not only violate the law but also deny women their rights.

The woman’s father approached the police after the incident, seeking justice for his daughter. According to the complaint, the man justified his action by saying he disapproved of his wife’s decision to walk alone. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter to gather further details.

Police have assured strict action against the accused, emphasizing that instant divorce is no longer acceptable under Indian law. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act aims to protect women from the arbitrary and unjust practice, ensuring legal safeguards for those affected.
