Lagos Commissioner Denies N1 Billion Bribery Allegations in Oral Estate Demolition

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has refuted claims that his ministry demanded N1 billion or received N700 million to halt a demolition exercise in Oral Estate, Ojota. Describing the allegations as false and malicious, Wahab accused detractors of attempting to blackmail the state government.

In a statement posted on his X page, the commissioner firmly denied that he or any official from his ministry requested or received any payment from property owners. “These claims are entirely false and a deliberate attempt to blackmail the government,” Wahab stated. He clarified that no sums, including the alleged N1 billion or N700 million, were involved in the ongoing operation to clear illegal structures obstructing drainage setbacks and canals in Oral Estate.

Wahab emphasized that the demolition is a critical public safety measure aimed at preventing flooding and protecting Lagos residents, not subject to negotiation or payment. He described the allegations as a “dangerous distraction” from the ministry’s mission and vowed to pursue legal action against those responsible, demanding they substantiate their claims before relevant authorities.

The commissioner reiterated the state’s commitment to continuing the clearance operation to ensure public safety.
