Police in Waterval Probe Fraud Case After Elderly Woman Loses Over R60,000

Police in Waterval, Vhembe District, are investigating a case of fraud after an elderly woman was defrauded of more than R60,000 by an unknown woman who allegedly took her bank card, withdrew cash, and made several purchases at Hubyeni Shopping Centre in Elim.

According to reports, on 29 June 2024, around 10:30, the victim was attempting to withdraw money at an ATM when she asked for assistance from an unknown woman. The suspect allegedly helped her complete the transaction and returned the card and cash to her handbag.

Unaware of what had happened, the victim, who is unable to read, continued shopping. When she returned home, her family discovered that a large amount of money had been withdrawn from her savings account. Further investigation revealed that her original bank card had been swapped with another belonging to someone else.

Police investigations found that the suspect used the stolen card to make multiple purchases at various stores in the same complex and in Makhado.

A case of fraud was registered at Waterval SAPS. Although it was initially closed due to a lack of leads, detectives later reopened it after new evidence emerged. Preliminary findings suggest the suspect may be targeting elderly and vulnerable victims.

Police are appealing to the woman captured on CCTV footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Anyone with information that could help locate the suspect is urged to contact Sergeant Nancy Rikhotso on 072 752 7794 or visit the nearest police station.
