The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday. Amupitan announced that INEC has entered into a partnership with NIMC to deliver a credible voters’ register and transparent elections. He said INEC would leverage NIMC’s robust data archi...

Svitolina beats Gauff in three sets to win third Italian Open title; Sinner reaches Rome final with win over Medvedev

Elina Svitolina captured her third Italian Open title on Saturday, outlasting Coco Gauff in a three-set battle to claim her first WTA 1000 crown in Rome since 2018.

Svitolina prevailed 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 in a nearly three-hour final, adding to her previous victories at the event in 2017 and 2018. The Ukrainian held firm in key moments, including saving multiple break points in the opening set before pulling away in the decider with two breaks of serve. She sealed the win on her third match point with a volley at the net, securing the 20th title of her career.

Gauff, who was attempting to become the first American woman to win in Rome since 2016, fought back after dropping the first set by taking the second in a tiebreak. However, she was unable to sustain momentum in the final set after struggling on serve throughout the match. Despite the loss, she said she was encouraged by her form heading into the French Open and described the tournament as a valuable learning experience.

In the men’s draw, top-ranked Jannik Sinner advanced to the final after completing a rain-delayed semifinal victory over Daniil Medvedev, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Sinner, who was leading in the deciding set when play was suspended, returned to finish the match in short order and converted on his third match point.

The Italian is now one win away from becoming the first Italian man since 1976 to win the Rome title and could join a select group of players to complete a sweep of all nine Masters 1000 events. He will face Casper Ruud, who advanced with a dominant straight-sets win over Luciano Darderi.

Sinner has now won all four of his career meetings with Ruud without dropping a set, including a lopsided victory in Rome last year. Ruud acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting Sinner’s form and dominance on clay, while also expressing motivation for a potential upset on Italian soil.

Sinner enters the final on a long winning streak and remains in pursuit of further history as he continues his strong clay-court season ahead of the French Open.
