Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted deepening strategic ties and expanding energy cooperation during talks in Beijing on Wednesday, held just days after U.S. President Donald Trump visited China. The meeting underscored growing alignment between the two countries on trade, diplomacy, and global energy markets, with both sides emphasizing their shared interests in oil and natural gas exports, as well as broader economic coordination.
The two leaders oversaw the signing of more than 40 agreements covering trade, technology, media, and other areas of cooperation, and agreed to extend a friendship treaty first established in 2001. Xi said the bilateral relationship had reached “the highest level in history,” while Putin pointed to energy collaboration as the “driving force” behind economic ties, describing Russia as a stable supplier of resources and China as a major consumer. Xi also called for a “complete cessation of hostilities” in the Middle East, warning that prolonged conflict could disrupt global supply chains and energy stability, while both leaders reiterated criticism of unilateral approaches in international affairs and pledged to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the digital economy.
