Eleven hospitalized after duck boat carrying 31 people tips during towing at Cambridge ramp following mechanical issue
Eleven people were hospitalized Saturday after a duck boat tipped over during towing at a boat ramp in the Cambridge area of Massachusetts, officials said.
Authorities said the vessel was carrying 31 passengers when it began experiencing a mechanical issue. While being towed onto a ramp on Museum Way, the boat suddenly tilted onto its side.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene. Officials said 11 passengers were taken to nearby hospitals with what are believed to be minor injuries. No one fell into the water, and all 31 people onboard were accounted for.
The exact cause of the mechanical problem remains under investigation.
The operator of the tour service said the incident occurred when a tow rope broke during the towing process, causing the vehicle to roll onto its side. The company said it has suspended operations for the remainder of the day while it works with authorities to review what happened.
Duck boat tours are a well-known attraction in the Boston area, offering sightseeing trips on both land and water along the Charles River. The service has operated since the 1990s and runs a fleet of amphibious vehicles used for daily tourist tours, as well as occasional celebratory parades for local sports championships.
