Billy Ray Cyrus is speaking publicly for the first time about a serious health crisis that left him hospitalized and uncertain about his future.
The country music star, 64, revealed that he was diagnosed with vocal paralysis in 2024 after battling a severe case of sepsis that nearly cost him his life.
Looking back on the experience, Cyrus described it as one of the most difficult periods he has ever faced. Making the situation even more emotional was the fact that the hospital held painful memories for him.
“I don't know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare,” he said. “Two years before that, my mom had d!ed in that hospital, on the very floor that I was on.”
Cyrus lost his mother, Ruth Ann, in 2022 at the age of 85.
During the health scare, he said his entire body became swollen and doctors warned him to prepare for the worst.
Despite the grim outlook, Cyrus made a full recovery, something he says even surprised medical professionals.
“I had a prayer answered,” he said while expressing gratitude to God. “That's a miracle.”
His challenges did not end there. Following the illness, Cyrus was diagnosed with vocal paralysis, leaving him unsure whether he would ever sing again.
He credits music, faith and family for helping him push forward during that difficult chapter. One source of comfort came from a song performed by his daughter, Noah Cyrus, titled “Don't Put It All on Me,” which was written by his son Braison.
“Noah's got that one song, ‘Don't Put It All on Me,’ that honestly saved my life,” he said.
Another powerful moment came from his five-year-old grandson Bear.
“In this very broken moment of my life, my little grandson Bear looked at me and said, ‘Try again,’” Cyrus recalled. He explained that the words struck him deeply and became a reminder not to give up, both in life and in music.
Today, Cyrus says he is in a much better place and credits actress Elizabeth Hurley for encouraging him throughout his recovery.
According to Cyrus, Hurley constantly reminded him that his voice was improving, even pushing him to take on new challenges.
“Elizabeth would say to me, ‘Do you understand your voice is coming back?’” he shared. “She encouraged me to the point where she had me do The Masked Singer. She said, ‘You need to do it to challenge yourself.’”
