Information Minister Presents N9.654b 2024 Budget Estimate
Ministry of Information and National Orientation has assured Nigerians that it is working diligently to refine both the ministry and its agencies to serve as ambassadors and positive representatives of Nigeria.
The minister of information Muhammad Idris Malagi gave the assurance in his brief during the budget defence for the 2024 appropriation act.
Explaining the ministry's commitment to ensuring positive change, Mr. Malagi stated that they are preparing to launch a national value and attitude reorientation initiative for Nigerians to reclaim values that have been eroded over the years.
He argued that such actions would help in rebranding the country's image, giving foreign investors the confidence to invest their resources in Nigeria.
Muhammad Malagi further stated that they have the intention to regularly coordinate media engagements with other ministries and government agencies to inform Nigerians about their activities through national conferences and discussions.
The minister also disclosed plans to work in partnership with UNESCO to create a center at the Media and Information Literacy Centre in Nigeria, aimed at promoting peace and security.
"When I visited UNESCO a couple of weeks ago, I secured such a green light for a physical structure in Nigeria, which we currently don't have. This would provide media practitioners with the opportunity to receive thorough training".
Accordingly the minister has a proposal to upgrade the Media Agencies with modern equipments that can operate smoothly without any hitches.
Also, in the ministry's agenda, the minister intends to revitalize the moribund National Institute of Public Information in Kaduna. This initiative aims to equip public information managers with modern methods aligned with global best practice.
The Mr Malagi also intends to modernize the National Press Centre, enabling foreigners to gain insights into what they are seeking in the country before pursuing their objectives.
In addition to these aspirations, the minister presented a budget estimate of 9.654 billion naira, with the only capital provision being 1.14 billion.
Explaining the budgetary provisions, he mentioned that out of the total, 4.749 billion naira is allocated for personnel across the entire ministry and its agencies, while 3.8 billion is specifically designated for the ministry alone.
According to him, considering the provision of the capital component of the budget at 1.14 billion, it cannot adequately align with the ministry's proposal on how to enhance its role as the image-maker of the federal government and Nigeria in general.
Commenting on the minister's submission, the chairman of the committee, Senator Eze Emeka, and members were not comfortable with the provisions and intentions presented by the minister.
Senator Eze appealed to the minister to utilize the available funds for Nigerians to feel a positive impact and assured of scheduling an executive session with the minister to examine the situation and find better solutions to the challenges.
