Egyptian family of six rearrested after ICE release, lawyer warns of fast-track deportation despite court-ordered pause and ongoing asylum case An Egyptian family of six who had recently been released from immigration custody was rearrested Saturday, with their attorney warning they could face rapid deportation despite a court order temporarily pausing their removal. The family—Hayam El Gamal and her five children—had spent roughly ten months in the Dilley detention center outside San Antonio, Texas, where conditions have drawn criticism over access to food and medical care. A federal magistrate judge had ruled earlier this week that the family should be released while their asylum case proceeds after they entered the United States in 2022 on a tourist visa.  NUT NEW EXECUTIVES PAY COURTESY VISIT TO MINISTRY OF ESTABLISHMENT

The Honourable Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, has reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to maintaining a strong and productive relationship with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). He made this known while receiving the newly elected Executives of the Union during a courtesy visit to the Ministry on Thursday.

In his welcome remarks, Mr. Ayantayo congratulated the new Executives on their successful election and commended the Union for its longstanding partnership with the State Government. He assured the leadership that the Ministry would continue to collaborate with them as it had done with their predecessors to further the cause of teachers and enhance the development of the education sector in Lagos State.

The Commissioner appreciated the Union for recognising the strides made by the State Government in improving the education sector. He noted that teachers occupy a vital position in society, describing them as nation-builders whose influence cuts across generations.

“The role of teachers cannot be overemphasised. The NUT is one of the most formidable unions that has existed long before some of us were born, and it continues to be a key partner in the progress of our society,” he stated.

Mr. Ayantayo further noted that the State Government has always prioritised the welfare of teachers and workers generally, adding that Lagos remains both teacher-friendly and labour-friendly.

He assured the visiting Executives that all issues raised concerning the welfare of teachers would be given due attention. He also disclosed that the Ministry of Establishments and Training would work closely with the Ministry of Basic Education to fashion out modalities for resolving matters affecting teachers’ well-being.

Earlier in his address, the NUT Chairman, Comrade Akitoye Hassan, expressed gratitude to the Honourable Commissioner for the warm reception accorded to the delegation. He commended the Lagos State Government for its visionary leadership and consistent investment in education, describing Lagos as “a model worthy of emulation by other States.”

Comrade Hassan also lauded Mr. Ayantayo for the quality of leadership he has brought to the Ministry, acknowledging his openness and dedication to the service of public workers. He, however, appealed to the State Government to revisit the issue of retirement age for teachers, noting that Lagos State pioneered the initiative and should continue to lead in setting progressive standards for the profession.
