Jesse Jackson hospitalized for medical evaluation
Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, 84, has been hospitalized and is under medical observation as he continues treatment for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare neurodegenerative disorder he has been battling for the past decade, according to a statement from the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. The organization said Jackson’s family has asked for prayers and support during this time as doctors monitor his condition.
Jackson, initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, received confirmation earlier this year that his symptoms were due to PSP, a condition that affects muscle control, balance, and eye movement due to damage to specific areas of the brain. Known for his lifelong dedication to civil rights and social justice, Jackson emerged as one of the most prominent figures in the movement after working closely with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He later ran for president twice and founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, where he served as president until stepping down in 2023.
