Zimbabwean opposition leader Job Sikhala released on bail after explosives found in Pretoria

Zimbabwean opposition politician Job Sikhala has been released on bail after being arrested in South Africa on charges of possessing explosives. The incident has raised serious questions about both the alleged offence and the political context surrounding it.

Sikhala (53) and his 78-year-old uncle, Alexander Ferrowst Thema, were stopped by the South African Police Service in Pretoria’s city centre on 6 November, while travelling in a vehicle along Kgosi Mampuru Street. According to the state’s account, officers intercepted the car after a tip-off. A search reportedly revealed 26 blasting cartridges and 15 capped fuse connectors in the vehicle.

Following their arrest, Sikhala and his uncle appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 10 November, charged with possession of explosives. The matter was then postponed to 13 November for a formal bail application and he was released today on R10 000.
