Cuba announced that international airlines will no longer be able to refuel on the island due to a shortage of aviation fuel, a crisis worsened by U.S. threats of tariffs on countries supplying oil to the nation. The government said the shortage, expected to begin Monday, could disrupt flights at all of Cuba’s international airports and may continue for about a month.
The Cuban government has implemented measures to manage the energy crisis, including restricting fuel sales, reducing the workweek for state-owned companies, shortening school days, and closing some tourist facilities. Moscow called Cuba’s fuel situation “truly critical” and criticized U.S. pressure for exacerbating the crisis. Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno RodrÃguez Parrilla condemned Washington’s tariff threats as “blackmail and coercion,” while Mexico announced plans to send humanitarian aid and explore diplomatic avenues to resume oil shipments to the Caribbean island.
