1,100 abducted across northern Nigeria in three months — Amnesty International Amnesty International has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action to address insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria. In a statement posted on its X handle on Sunday, the organisation said, “President Bola Tinubu and his government must urgently address the country’s horrifying spate of abductions targeting rural communities and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the northern part of the country, as at least 1,100 people have been abducted in three months – from January to April 2026.” It noted that victims are often subjected to severe abuses, including torture, starvation, rape and forced involvement in violent acts. “Apart from killing people, gunmen are now on a rampage of abductions – largely for lucrative ransom. Some stay months at the mercy of gunmen in punishing situations. “Estimates of the number of abductions by gunmen and armed groups across Nigeria vary, and some of...

Peter Obi Reveals Collaboration with Kwankwaso to Revive Kano’s Industrial Hubs, Amid NNPP Crisis

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has disclosed an ongoing collaboration with former Kano State Governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, aimed at restoring economic vitality to Kano State and northern Nigeria.

Obi made the revelation on Sunday while speaking at Kwankwaso’s Millar Road residence in Kano during an Sallah celebration attended by hundreds of guests, including prominent opposition figures.

“Although we are today here not for politics but to celebrate Sallah with Kwankwaso, but I bet you we are putting a strong association to bring back Kano and its industrial hubs,” Obi stated.

He specifically highlighted plans to revive key industrial zones, saying: “We are bringing Bompai, Sharada Industrial centers back to their lives and also Bank of the North would surely be back.”

The gathering drew high-profile attendees from opposition parties, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson, alongside other political heavyweights mainly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Sources close to the event described the occasion as laying groundwork for Kwankwaso’s anticipated formal defection from the NNPP, which has been embroiled in a major legal and identity crisis.

The NNPP faction led by Kwankwaso—recognised by its books logo—recently suffered a significant setback when the Court of Appeal in Abuja ruled against it, affirming the legitimacy of the rival NNPP faction identified by the vegetables logo.

Following the appellate court judgment, reports indicate that Kwankwaso has intensified consultations with various political platforms, with strong indications pointing toward a possible move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
