Iran’s participation in this summer’s World Cup, where it is scheduled to play its first two matches in Los Angeles, is now uncertain amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s football federation, told local media that recent attacks by the United States make it “unlikely that we can look forward to the World Cup,” though he said the final decision rests with sports authorities. Talks are ongoing, and FIFA is monitoring the situation, with officials privately expecting Iran to compete. Iran is set to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles before moving to Seattle for a match against Egypt. If Iran withdraws, Iraq could take its place as the next team in line from the Asian Football Confederation.
The discussions occur as violence escalates in the region. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in a U.S.-backed Israeli strike at his Tehran compound, along with several other senior leaders. Iranian state TV confirmed Khamenei’s death over the weekend, with reactions across the country split between mourning and celebration. Additional Iranian strikes have been reported, and a U.S.-Israeli airstrike over the weekend hit a school in Iran, killing more than 150 civilians, according to local media.
