Netflix is using AI to recreate the voice of late actor Gene Wilder for a new unscripted competition series set in the “Willy Wonka” universe, the company announced.
The series, titled “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket,” will feature 12 contestants who win “Golden Tickets” and bring a partner with them as they enter a re-created version of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory to compete in a series of games and challenges.
The show’s teaser includes an AI-generated version of Wilder’s voice delivering an opening line about returning to his “beloved chocolate factory.”
Wilder, who originated the role of Willy Wonka in the 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” died in 2016 at the age of 83. His career also included roles in “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” and “Young Frankenstein.”
According to the announcement, the voice recreation was created with permission from Wilder’s estate. Gene Wilder’s widow, Karen B. Wilder, said the project honors his legacy and the lasting impact of his portrayal of Willy Wonka, describing his performance as one that continues to bring “joy, laughter and inspiration” to audiences.
The series will also feature Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa Loompa in the original film, reprising his role. The release coincides with the 55th anniversary of the 1971 movie.
The AI-generated voice is part of a broader trend of digital recreations used in entertainment, including posthumous voice and likeness projects involving other well-known performers.
“Wonka’s The Golden Ticket” is scheduled to premiere globally on Sept. 23, with a two-part finale set for Sept. 30. Netflix did not say whether viewers will be explicitly informed on-screen that Wilder’s voice is AI-generated.
