Colombian superstar Shakira drew an estimated 2 million people to a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, generating an estimated $160 million economic impact for the city, according to local officials.
The massive show, held Saturday in front of the Copacabana Palace Hotel, was part of Rio’s “Todo Mundo no Rio” initiative, a city-backed program designed to boost tourism and economic activity during May, typically a slower season for visitors.
City agencies reported strong gains across hospitality, food services, transportation, and retail sectors. The event required a large-scale public operation, with expanded security, logistics coordination, and emergency services working at full capacity throughout the night.
The concert opened with a dramatic 1,500-drone display forming a glowing she-wolf in the sky, a visual symbol closely associated with the singer. Moments later, Shakira took the stage wearing an outfit inspired by the colors of Brazil, immediately engaging the massive beachfront crowd.
Speaking in Portuguese during the performance, she reflected on her connection to the country and the scale of the audience.
“Brazil, I love you. It is magical to see millions of souls together, ready to sing, feel, and dance,” she told the crowd.
The nearly two-hour-plus set featured hits spanning her decades-long career, along with segments focused on empowerment themes, particularly centered on women. At one point, she told fans, “Women don’t cry anymore. Alone we may be more vulnerable, but together we are invincible.”
The event also featured surprise appearances from major Brazilian artists, including Anitta, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, and Ivete Sangalo, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
The “Todo Mundo no Rio” program has quickly become a major tourism driver for the city. It launched in 2024 with a landmark concert by Madonna that drew 1.6 million people, followed in 2025 by a performance from Lady Gaga that attracted about 2.5 million attendees.
Copacabana Beach has a long history of hosting record-breaking crowds for major concerts, including performances by Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, and Stevie Wonder, each drawing massive audiences over the decades.
Officials said medical teams responded to roughly 400 incidents during the event, with dozens of people transferred to hospitals for minor injuries, discomfort, or alcohol-related issues. Cleanup crews later collected about 362 tons of waste, supported by nearly 2,000 sanitation workers.
Following her Brazil performance, Shakira is set to continue her tour in North America, with a series of U.S. concerts scheduled between June and July before wrapping the leg of the tour in New Jersey later in the month.
