TEXAS DRIVER AND INFANT RESCUED AFTER FLASH FLOODING SWEEPS THROUGH BEEVILLE ROADWAY DURING HEAVY RAINS. (PHOTO).

Texas driver and infant rescued after flash flooding sweeps through Beeville roadway during heavy rains

A driver and an infant were rescued from fast-moving floodwaters in Beeville, Texas, after heavy rains over Memorial Day weekend caused a creek to overflow and turn a roadway into a dangerous rushing current.

Authorities said a white sedan entered a low-lying water crossing along a creek on May 23 as intense rainfall swept across parts of the central and eastern United States. The water rose quickly, leaving the vehicle stuck mid-crossing with the driver and infant unable to escape as the roadway rapidly flooded.

Body-camera video from a City of Beeville Police officer shows first responders wading through waist-deep water to reach the stranded vehicle. Once at the car, the driver handed over the infant in a carrier, and the officer, along with a volunteer firefighter, secured the child and covered them with a rain jacket while navigating the strong current.

Officials said firefighters on scene had attempted to warn the driver not to enter the water, but the vehicle continued into the crossing before barricades could be put in place. The driver reportedly did not see the warning in time as floodwaters rose quickly and cut off the roadway.

No injuries were reported. Authorities emphasized that conditions at low-water crossings can change in moments, urging drivers not to attempt to pass through flooded roads under any circumstances, no matter the urgency of travel.
