Arianna Huffington has pushed back against Gen Z’s desire for strict boundaries between work and personal life, arguing that anyone with an “interesting job” cannot simply shut their laptop at 5 p.m.
The Thrive Global founder, who previously built The Huffington Post into a $315 million acquisition, explained that her own schedule rarely has a fixed end.
She said meaningful work often leaves tasks unfinished at day’s end, and if someone consistently completes everything before bedtime, it may signal they aren’t being challenged enough.
Huffington’s stance comes from personal experience with burnout. In 2007, while working 18‑hour days, she collapsed from exhaustion, breaking her cheekbone after hitting her desk.
Rather than advocating for fewer hours, she emphasizes the importance of replenishing energy through sleep, nutrition, and recovery.
She insists that most adults need seven to nine hours of rest to function effectively, and that wellness practices like exercise and healthy eating are essential to sustaining demanding careers.
For Huffington, work is not separate from life but part of a fulfilling whole. She describes her job as a source of joy, provided she takes time to recharge with family, friends, and self‑care.
She believes that success comes from fueling both body and soul, not from counting hours. In her view, the key is approaching work with resilience and passion, while ensuring that personal renewal keeps pace with professional intensity.
