A person was killed, and three others were injured Friday after lightning struck a group of beachgoers in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, officials said.
Emergency crews responded to the 6500 block of Estero Boulevard after reports that four people had been struck during a thunderstorm. When responders arrived, they found one person unresponsive while bystanders were already performing CPR and using an AED.
Despite lifesaving efforts, that individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three victims were taken to local hospitals for further evaluation. Their conditions were not immediately released.
Authorities urged beachgoers and residents to pay close attention to rapidly changing weather conditions, especially during storms that can produce sudden lightning strikes. Officials warned people to avoid open water, seek sturdy shelter immediately if lightning is seen or thunder is heard, and stay away from isolated objects such as trees or poles.
They also advised remaining indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder and avoiding windows and doors during severe weather. Emergency officials said anyone in distress should call 911 immediately.
The incident occurred as scattered thunderstorms moved through the Fort Myers Beach area during the Fourth of July holiday period, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning.
