Former Catholic Knight arrested over alleged ritual cleansing exercise in Nnewi Vigilantes in Nnewi have arrested Sir James Louis Okoye, a former Catholic Knight of St John International, who reportedly renounced Christianity during the official opening of Our Lady of Assumpta Catholic Church, Nnewi in January this year over non-recognition of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Okoye was arrested after he was seen on Saturday wearing a red dress with fresh palm fronds between his lips, with a bell in hand, performing what he believed was the ritual cleansing of Nnewi land on the streets of the town. Okoye gained popularity in January, during the official consecration of the Nnewi Catholic Cathedral, where he decried the non-recognition Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who he believed built the cathedral to almost completion before his death. He was captured on video removing his shoes and knighthood hat as he stepped out of the cathedral, shouting, “Ifeanyi Ubah ndo.” While stepping out of the gate,...

TARABA MOVES TO ABSORB VIGILANTES, HUNTERS INTO OFFICIAL SECURITY NETWORK TO TACKLE RURAL INSECURITY

The Taraba State Government has unveiled plans to formally integrate local vigilante groups and hunters into its official security architecture as part of a broader strategy to strengthen community safety and curb rising insecurity across the state.

Under the proposed framework, vigilantes and traditional hunters operating in communities across Taraba State will be registered, coordinated, and supervised within a unified structure designed to support conventional security agencies.

Officials say the initiative is aimed at improving intelligence gathering, strengthening patrol operations, and enhancing collaboration between grassroots security actors and formal law enforcement bodies.

For years, local vigilante groups and hunters have played a frontline role in protecting rural communities, particularly in remote areas where security personnel are limited.

By bringing these groups under an organised framework, authorities believe security responses can become faster, more coordinated, and more effective.

The state government noted that rural communities remain the most vulnerable to attacks due to difficult terrain and limited security presence.

Local hunters and vigilante members often possess deep knowledge of forests, footpaths, and community networks an advantage officials say can significantly improve surveillance and intelligence.

The planned integration is expected to formalise their operations, establish clearer command structures, and ensure better coordination with police and other security agencies.

Authorities say the move forms part of broader efforts by the state to strengthen community-based security systems amid growing concerns about safety in parts of the country.

Security analysts note that several states in Nigeria have increasingly relied on community-led security groups to support overstretched security forces.

If fully implemented, the Taraba initiative could serve as a model for other states seeking to leverage local knowledge while maintaining official oversight of grassroots security operations.
