Billy Ray Cyrus defends Trump: 'Being president is tough'

Billy Ray Cyrus recently reflected on politics and family tensions during an interview with Sky News.

The 64-year-old country star, best known for his hit Achy Breaky Heart, was promoting his upcoming album The Hill, produced by his son Braison and featuring a duet with daughter Noah.

Toward the end of the conversation, host Wilfred Frost asked about Cyrus’s support for Donald Trump in the 2024 election, noting that the singer had previously identified as a Democrat.

Cyrus responded by acknowledging the challenges of the presidency, saying, “Being president’s a tough job,” and emphasized his habit of praying for the country and its leaders regardless of party.

Cyrus’s political journey has been complex. Back in 2000, he described himself as a lifelong Democrat, even though his song “We the People” was used by Republican George W. Bush’s campaign.

In August 2024, he publicly endorsed Trump on Instagram and later performed at the president’s inaugural ball, though the event was plagued by technical difficulties and widely criticized online.

The performance sparked concern from his son Trace, who posted a heartfelt message expressing worry about his father’s well-being and lamenting how much he had changed over the years.

Despite the controversy, Cyrus has remained focused on his music and family. He shares seven children across different relationships, including Miley, Noah, Braison, Brandi, Trace, Christopher Cody, and Ilaria.

Trace’s emotional post highlighted the strain within the family, noting that Cyrus had distanced himself from his children.

Still, Cyrus defended his performance by sharing a video of himself singing his classic hit, insisting it was the highlight of the Liberty Ball.

With The Hill set for release on June 16, Cyrus appears determined to move forward creatively, even as his personal and political choices continue to spark debate.
