Jill Biden recently opened up about the painful reality of her son Hunter’s addiction, sharing how difficult it was to confront the truth aloud. In her interview on Dinner’s on Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson, she recalled recording the audiobook of her memoir A View from the East Wing and struggling to say the words, “My son was a drug addict.”
Though she had written them, voicing them proved far more painful, leaving her shaken during the session.
She admitted that during her time as first lady, she avoided speaking publicly about addiction because the subject was too raw. What hurt most, she explained, was hearing Hunter’s own accounts of his drug use details that shocked her and left her wondering how he had survived.
Jill described the disorienting cycle of addiction, where loved ones vanish for weeks only to reappear as if nothing had happened, leaving families to cope with hidden signs of struggle.
“Your whole family suffers,” she emphasized, underscoring how addiction radiates pain outward.
Despite the anguish, Jill expressed hope that sharing her story might inspire others to believe recovery is possible. She pointed to Hunter’s turnaround as proof that even from the depths of despair, healing can happen.
The conversation also touched on her broader reflections her bond with Joe Biden, memories of Beau Biden, and the closing days of the administration painting a portrait of resilience shaped by both public service and private heartbreak.
