 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. FRAUDSTERS NOW HAVE A NEW METHOD OF DEFRAUDING PEOPLE THROUGH THE RECENT EFCC RECRUITMENT EXERCISE.{READ}.

                    It has come to the knowledge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC,that some unscrupulous members of the public have been defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians in the on-going recruitment exercise of the Commission.The modus operandi of the scammers is to request for applications from job-seeking Nigerians and later inform the applicants to pay N49,000 {Forty Nine Thousand Naira only} as processing fee.Thereafter,the ''successful candidate'' were asked to pay another N48,000 {Forty Eight Thousand Naira only} into an account for accomodation and transportation.A poorly written appointment letter purportedly from a non-existent office of Director General,Ibrahim Lamorde and dated 03/07/2016,sent to one Ubong Aniefiok Bassey reads: ''This is to inform you that you have been offered a job into the nigeria E.F.C.C,all applicant that have applied 2016/2017 nigeria EFCC form are expected to come down to the head office at Abuja on 15/07/2016.
Applicants are to pay his/her prescribed fees which is N49,000.0...All pplicants are to come down to the head office at Abuja on 15/07/2017 with teller slip for the payment ...Congratulation''.
The Commission  does not and will never ask for money from prospective candidates in the ongoing recruitment exercise.While efforts are on to track those behind these nefarious activities,we urge members of the public to be vigilant,not to fall victim of these scammers.
