S. A: FOUR PEOPLE HAVE DIED AFTER A CAR WAS SWEPT AWAY AT AN OVERFLOWING BRIDGE IN THE MAKOTOPONG RIVER NEAR SEBAYENG.(PHOTO).

 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. WIDOWS OF DEAD NIGERIAN SOLDIERS WERE CHARGED TO BR SELF-RELIANT DURING AN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM BY NERI.{PHOTOS}.

     Surviving widows and families of gallant soldiers who paid the ultimate price in the fight against insurgency in the North East have been charged to be self-reliant by making effective use of skills and support kits acquired during the empowerment training facilitated by the North East Regional Initiative (NERI) and its partners.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Ibrahim Manu Yusuf gave this charge during the graduation ceremony of 200 beneficiaries who received various training in the production of local soft drinks, tailoring, knitting design and grinding. The GOC represented at the occasion by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Kingsley Samuel commended NERI for its ceaseless support and partnership with 7 Division and the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) towards providing livelihood support to the widows of Nigerian military personnel. He therefore urged the beneficiaries of the training to maximize the benefits of the settlement kits ranging from grinding machines, generator sets, deep freezers, tailoring and knitting machines amongst other distributed items to them.
Earlier in his remarks, the representative of NERI, Mr Suleiman Dauda stated that, the peace and stability being enjoyed in the state today, couldn’t have been achieved without the sacrifice of the Nigerian Armed Forces. According to him, ‘’ NERI is proud of the services rendered by the fallen Heroes and to show appreciation decided to partner with NAOWA 7 Division Chapter to provide Agricultural, infrastructural and Developmental support to the families of fallen Heroes”. Mr Sulieman appreciated the support of other partners particularly Borno State Women Development Initiative (BOWDI) and the State Agency for Mass Literacy.
Highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of certificates of participation, settlement kits and food items to all participants of the training. Dignitaries present included; the representative of the Divisional President NAOWA 7 Division, Mrs Yosi Yakubu, the Executive Secretary of Agency for Mass Literacy, Umar Saleh Bewas and the representative of BOWDI, Fatima Askira.
