FG INAUGURATES COMMITTEE ON NEW CIVIL SERVICE WELFARE POLICY.

THE Federal Government has said that it is looking beyond payment of a new minimum wage to Federal Civil Servants by ensuring that the entire welfare of workers is given due consideration.
Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, said this while inaugurating a technical committee for the development of the Federal Civil Service Welfare Policy in Abuja.
She said the committee was a very important one because welfare of workers must be given a top priority, regretting however, that over the years, there had been uncoordinated approach towards welfare of the Civil Servants and little attention to occupational health and safety work environment issues.
She added that members of the technical committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Special Service Office, OHCSF, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, were drawn from her office and other relevant Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).
The committee was given three months within which to complete its assignment.
Oyo-Ita, said: “Workers should look at issues more broader than just salaries. Welfare of a worker goes beyond his salaries. Welfare of a worker, even his physical health is a matter of importance to his employer.
“His health status and psychological frame of mind are important. His work environment, his aspirations; what he will do when he retires are important and all these add to welfare issues.
“So, I want Nigerian workers to look beyond this kind of daily bread, hand to mouth attitude; if I don’t have salary increase, I can’t work. There is so much than salary increases which Nigerian workers must understand,” she said.
The Head of Service said the intention now was to have an institutionalised welfare policy noting that in the past, welfare administration was based on circulars, which could hardly be referred to.
She disclosed that the Welfare Service Office in her office, was also developing a system that took the well-being of employees beginning from entry into the service to the exit and beyond, in order to attract the brightest and the best as well motivate them to contribute fully towards achieving the overall vision of government. She said the 2017-2020 Federal Civil Service Strategic Implementation Plan, which articulated a prioritised strategy to drive the transformation of the Federal Civil Service, was developed in line with the reform initiative of the current administration to ensure unhindered access to transparent, timely and efficient service delivery.
