 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. EFCC ARRAIGNS COLLEGE BOSS FOR FRAUD,OPERATING ILLEGAL INSTITUTION.{PHOTOS}.

      The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, October 25, 2018, arraigned one Alfred Azemohor, Proprietor of Global College of Marine and Technology, Warri, before Justice E. Nwite of the Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State on a one -count charge bordering on fraud and operating illegal institution.
Nemesis caught up with Azemohor when a petition was sent to the EFCC by his victims who have been made to part with their hard earned monies by the institution and in turn, issued fake certificates.
Investigations reveled that Global College Of Marine and Technology, Warri, now known as Coastline Seafarers Academy started in 1999 and has been running programmes like normal accredited higher institutions. But the programmes were neither approved nor accredited by the National Board For Technical Education ( NBTE).
Investigations also reveled the school has been awarding Diploma Certificates since 2012 and usually charges its students between N 130, 000 per semester while tuition fees for certificates programs which run for 6 months cost candidates N60,000 .
The Offence is contrary to section 1(1) b of the Advance Fee Fraud and other fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act. He pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, Aso .L. Peter's prayed the court for a trial date and urged that the defendant to be remanded in prison custody. But the defence counsel, M. Dukun informed the court of his bail application which he claimed he filed earlier in the day which he said he had served the prosecution.
But for the fact that the said application was not in the court's record, Justice Nwite after listening to both counsel adjourned to November 1, 2018 for hearing of bail and November 26, 2018 for commencement of trial.One more photo below.
