 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. A student of Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos and representative of Lagos Island East LCDA, Gloria Ajala on Tuesday won the coveted Star Prize of the Spelling Bee competition to become the nominee as 'One Day Governor' of Lagos State.
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, while congratulating the winner, stated that in line with previous practice, Ajala would be given a scholarship by the State Government to pursue any course of her choice in any university in the country as well as being sponsored, together with her “cabinet” to attend a cultural exchange programme in Finland.
Adebule opined that the 2018 edition of the Spelling Bee competition has been highly educative and competitive and has produced a new set of winners in the primary and secondary categories to the delight of all interested parties, saying that “I am very impressed with the performance of the competitors in the grand finale of the Primary and the Secondary School categories”.
While noting that the competition has experienced improvement in the areas of presentation and vocabulary development, the Deputy Governor attributed the improvements to the various policies and programmes initiated by Governor Ambode-led administration to encourage learning as well as increase the spirit of competitiveness leading to the winning of many awards and laurels in different competitions.
The obviously elated Administrator listed some of the awards to include the best performing and winning State in the National ICT Olympiad; first prize in the grand finale of this year’s PZ Cusson's Chemistry Challenge; winner at the 2018 NNPC National Quiz Competition State Finals and winning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions at the Regional Finals of the World Robot Olympiad (Nigeria).
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Adebunmi Adekanye, recalled that the Spelling Bee competition, introduced in 2001 by the New Era Foundation to encourage academic excellence, has become the most interesting and keenly contested competition amongst Lagos State students.
The PS maintained that the prestige and privileges that come with winning the Spelling Bee contest have been a great motivating factor while the competition has helped a lot to improve the spelling skills as well as oral and written English language of pupils, students and spectators alike.
She opined that millions of Nigerian parents, teachers, pupils, students and professionals were usually part of the entertaining programme which is beamed live every year while the competition that has become a household name not only in the State but across the country.Ikhariale Grace of Tin Can Island Senior High School and Akinbodewa Oluwatosin of Iworo Ajido Senior Secondary School finished in the second and third positions respectively.
