 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.        Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has emphasised the need for all financial institutions in the country to follow due process in financial transactions for an improved economy.
Amosun, when receiving board members of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), in his office yesterday, said this will help boost the economy and elevate the status of citizens.
He commended the initiative of the board to establish its regional in the state, noting that majority of the banks are now opening their head offices in Ogun.
Chairman of the board, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun commended the governor for the giant strides of his administration, especially in the areas of infrastructure and the provision of adequate security, which she said has made the state conducive for investors.
The NDIC boss, who stated that the board is saddled with the effective supervision of banking deposits, solicited the support of the governor, who is returning to the Senate, to assist with in the amendment of the pending NDIC bill.
Amosun, who also received the newly elected executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State chapter, charged them to work for the greater benefit of journalism.
The governor admonished the new leadership not to betray the confidence reposed in them by their members, while also assuring them of his support.
Highlighting some achievements of his administration, Amosun said they include moving the state up to fourth position from 36th in the ease of doing business, second from the 27th position in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) as well as improved security and infrastructure.
In his remarks, the union's chairman, Comrade Soji Amosu, appreciated the governor for transforming Ogun into an enviable state and the elevation of some journalists to the position of permanent secretaries and heads of parastatals.
Commending the governor for ensuring a robust security in the state, the chairman said before 2011, citizens could not sleep with their two eyes closed.
He stated that no governor has been able to beat his records in terms of support to the union and journalists in the state.More photos below.
