One of the two police officers put on Orderly Room Trial over the death of a football fan, Kolade Johnson in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria has been found guilty and summarily dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan (on the right in the photo) was found guilty of discreditable conduct by acting in a manner prejudicial to discipline and unbecoming of members of the Force by shooting and killing Kolade Johnson. He was also found guilty of unlawful and unnecessary exercise of authority by using unnecessary violence, by using AK 47 rifle on the deceased in total neglect to the provisions of Force Order 237 on the use of Firearms.
MediaDimensions gathered that Inspector Olalekan has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Lagos State Police Command, Panti for prosecution in the conventional court.
The other suspect, Sergeant Godwin Orji (on the left in the photo) was however not found guilty and was subsequently discharged and acquitted. In its report, the Orderly Room Trial presided over by the adjudicating officer, CSP Indyar Apev held that there was no evidence linking the second suspect to the killing of Kolade Johnson.
The two officers were apprehended and subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings on the three-count charge of discreditable conduct, unlawful and unnecessary exercise of authority and damage to clothing or other articles contrary to paragraphs E (iii), Q (ii) and D (i) First Schedule, Police Act and Regulations, Cap 370 LFN 1990.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, DSP Bala Elkana the Orderly Room Trial which commenced on Monday ended on Thursday. The victim, Kolade Johnson was shot and killed by the police on Sunday in his neighbourhood when he had gone to watch a football match at a viewing centre.
