The operatives of the Lagos State Task Force over the weekend arrested 10 vehicle owners/drivers around Dopemu, Iyana-Ipaja, Agege and Mile 2 for driving against on-coming vehicles on one-way roads in contravention of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law of 2012.
CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, who led the enforcement exercise, disclosed that the offenders include commercial bus drivers and private car owners who have continued to flagrantly disobey the State Traffic Law despite several warnings by the government.
In his words, “It is disheartening that in spite of the vigorous enlightenment campaigns by the State government, some motorists could still be driving against traffic and causing unnecessary traffic congestion and hardship for other law-abiding motorists, commuters and ordinary Lagosians”.
He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for declaring zero tolerance on all road pot-holes, noting that this will considerably help in enhancing the free flow of traffic across the State after the rehabilitation exercise.
The Chairman, therefore, urged motorists, particularly commercial bus drivers to desist from driving against traffic and obey different traffic signs conspicuously displayed by traffic officers particularly in hotspot areas like Dopemu, Agege, Pen-cinema, Apapa, Oshodi-Mile 2 Expressway and Ikorodu Road.
In a related development, the Lagos State Government has issued a notice of 'Removal Order' to all owners/occupiers of illegal shanties, kiosks and containarised shops along Okokomaiko to Badagry and Iba-LASU road to immediately remove their structures from both ends of the road.
CSP Egbeyemi said the notice of 'Removal Order' became necessary in preparation for the commencement of rehabilitation works by the State government along the corridor.
According to the Chairman "The Governor was alarmed by the discomfort being experienced on daily basis by residents along the axis as a result of the bad Okokomaiko - Badagry roads and has vowed to ameliorate their sufferings by ensuring speedy rehabilitation of the expressway".
While disclosing that the Agency would soon commence a general clean up exercise of all these illegal shanties, kiosks and containarised shops along the route, he warned residents and illegal traders to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse on railway.
