On the first full day of #RoyalVisitPakistan, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have met different people and organisations highlighting the importance of quality education, especially for girls pursuing higher education and professional careers.
At a school in Islamabad, The Duke and Duchess met pupils from kindergarten to sixth form and heard more about how the students are benefiting from the ‘Teach for Pakistan’ programme.
Teach for Pakistan is a fast-track teacher training programme modelled on the UK’s successful ‘Teach First’ scheme, which is focused on improving the quality of teaching in schools which serve families from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Their Royal Highnesses then heard more about work taking place at the Margalla Hills in the foothills of the Himalayas, where schoolchildren are being taught the importance of protecting and caring for the world around them.
The Duke and Duchess then called on The President of Pakistan at the Presidential Palace, before attending an official meeting followed by a lunch with the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan at the Prime Minister’s official House in Islamabad.
In the evening, The Duke and Duchess attended a special reception hosted by the British High Commissioner to Pakistan.
At the event, held at the iconic Pakistan National Monument, The Duke said:
“The view from this hill would have been quite different when my grandmother, The Queen, first visited over half a century ago. Looking out, one would have seen the beginnings of a city under construction, yet to become the great capital that it is today.”
The reception celebrated the very best of Pakistani music and culture, as well as highlighting the prosperous UK-Pakistan relationship.
