Representatives of Lagos State Government, in conjunction with the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Engr. Adedamola Kuti, today assured Lagosians that the rehabilitation work on failed portions of both sides of Eko bridge has commenced at the Apongbon end.
The joint press conference presided over by the trio of Engr. Adedamola Kuti, the Special Adviser, Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye and the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Fredric Oladeinde, assured residents that the rehabilitation works on the bridge will be completed by December 14, 2019, with minimal effect on the traffic situation along the route.
Kuti allayed the fears of residents that the Eko Bridge would be shut down as a result of the ongoing rehabilitation work, noting that repairs will involve the replacement of the flexible pavement, along 150 meters failed portion, with rigid concrete to halt the incessant failure of the affected stretch of the road.
While dismissing the rumour of permanent closure during the road rehabilitation, the Controller of Works explained that the portion was divided into two and will be repaired alternately, assuring that the other part of the road will be available to commuters.
Commenting on the trending video that suggested a failure of the Third Mainland Bridge, Engineer Kuti dismissed the allegation, urged Lagosians to ignore it and explained that the expansion joints along the bridge will be replaced at the appropriate time.
He also noted that all the expansion joints on the Dorman Long Bridge were replaced and the road pavement resurfaced without shutting down the road, explaining that the delay in rehabilitation work along Eko Bridge resulted from the recent persistent rainfall.
“We want to assure Lagosians that the 3rd Mainland bridge is free, it is safe and we are not unmindful of the pains that Lagosians are currently going through with the rehabilitation works going on along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway and Lagos/Badgry Expressway. So, there is no way we will close the 3rd Mainland bridge at this critical period”, Engr. Kuti assured.
The Federal Controller of Works disclosed that the construction work on the Kara to Berger portion of the expressway will be completed and reopened on December 15, regretting that the heavy downpour slowed down the pace of work.
“Though the rains did not allow us to work at the planned speed; once we finish the construction work inbound Lagos from Kara, we will not close the other end of the road as planned. We will open both sides of the road by December 15 this year, so that people can enjoy freeflow of traffic especially during the yuletide; we will resume work on the other side in January”, he explained.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Fredric Oladeinde urged road users to obey traffic rules as officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Special Task Force and other security agencies have been mobilised to enforce the law.
In her contribution, the Special Adviser, Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye hinted that Lagos State will become a huge construction yard soon as the State government will confront all challenges causing discomfort to residents immediately the rains subside.
