More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added.      To complement the ongoing clean-up exercise by the State Government in Ikoyi and Victoria Island, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has commenced the regeneration of degraded areas in the axis.
A statement issued by the General Manager of the Agency, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, affirmed that the recovered areas will be secured by LASPARK for greening and protected against future abuse.
She disclosed that in pursuance of sustainable development, it is expedient that a greening structure is established which, according to her, will contribute greatly to the social and economic development of the State.
Speaking on the LASPARK’s plan for the sanitisation exercise, Popoola disclosed that degraded areas within the axis have been mapped out while the Agency will deploy appropriate resources for their regeneration and beautification.
“This project is going to set the pace for other areas that require regeneration across the State”, she declared.
She acknowledged that the Agency has consistently sensitised the public on the distasteful act of illegal conversion of open spaces, roadsides, walkways and laybys for various purposes as they are inimical to the advancement of the State’s greening efforts to combat an unhealthy and unsafe environment for Lagos State residents.
While imploring corporate organisations to partner with the Agency for possible adoption and beautification of these areas, Popoola stated that a collaborative and strategic effort with private organisations will complement the government’s efforts on greening.
The General Manager maintained that the Lagos State Government remains committed to salvaging the environment from degradation as well as developing and protecting it towards bequeathing a cleaner, greener and healthier environment to the citizens and residents of Lagos State.
