 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. On the 25/11/2020 at about 12:30pm,police patrol team attached to the Command Federal Highway Patrol while on stop and search operations at Oba along Onitsha/Owerri road intercepted a shuttle bus with one of the occupant namely Chibuzor Collins 'm' aged 23years native of Uzombe in Oguta LGA of Imo State behaving in a suspicious manner and upon search on the suspect,a double barrel locally made short gun loaded with two live cartridges was recovered in his posession.The suspect was promptly arrested is assisting the police with useful information to unravel his motive of being in possession of firearm inside a shuttle bus after which he would be brought to justice.
In a related development,on the 24/11/2020 at about 80:30pm,police patrol team attached to Okpoko Division while on patrol along Owerri road by Obodoukwu junction intercepted a middle aged man carrying a Ghana must go bag,when confronted, the man abandoned the bag and escaped in between vehicles.Upon search of the bag,one G3 rifle containing Seventeen rounds of 7.25×61mm live ammunition,one Pump action gun and one magazine were recovered.Effort is being intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspect in order to bring him to book.
Meanwhile,the Commissioner of Police *CP John B.Abang,fdc* appeal to members of the public to report suspicious activities or individuals to the Police through emergency number 07039194332 or to the nearest Police Statiom for prompt response.The CP also assure the public that their report will be discretely dealt with.
