 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Anambra Chief Judge, Anyachebelu Discharges Five Inmates, Grants Bail To Five Others.



Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu has discharged five inmates and granted bail to five others at Amawbia Correctional Centre, to mark the end of this year's jail delivery exercise.

The cases for which they were detained include murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, burglary, stealing among others.

The inmates discharged include Messers Chinedu Nnalue, Ifeanyi Ifekwulugo, Obinna Nwafor, Sunday Matthew and Michael Obiejesi.

While those granted bail were Sunday Nwoye from Ebonyi State, Echezona Ugwueze, Uchenna Mgbike, Arinze Kenneth and Chukwuemeka Ozogbo.

Delivering judgement after taking submissions from officials of the state Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, Anambra State Ministry of Justice, and a social welfare officer at the facility, Justice Anyachebelu charged judicial officials to be more proactive and responsive in the discharge of their duties, so that no innocent person would be incarcerated as a result of official negligence.

Justice Anyachebelu who disclosed that his visit was a routine exercise, said it is one of the responsibilities of any Chief Judge of a state to visit correctional centres once in a year and assured the determination of the state to lessen the plights of inmates awaiting trials at various holding facilities.

The Chief Judge assured that the state's judiciary would administratively ensure that the correctional centres are decongested by reducing the terms of inmates through speedy trials and cautioned those freed to be of good behavior henceforth.

On his part, the Deputy Comptroller of Corrections in the facility, Mr Echezona Okonkwo, represented by the Assistant Comptroller of Correction, Mr Alphonsus Nwana, commended the exercise and said that inmates in the facility are being trained in various skills, urging those who have regained freedom to mend their ways and be useful to the society.

The Chief Judge during the court proceedings, treated over forty cases while those whose cases have appeared before a law court and were adjourned to a close date were asked to remain in custody as they would be tried in a regular court.

Justice Anyachebelu was accompanied by six judges.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
