APC, PDP DISAGREE OVER LAST MINUTE RECRUITMENTS, NEW AIRPORT PROJECT IN BENUE

There is growing unease in Benue State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) over massive recruitment in the state’s civil service and other capital projects embarked upon by the outgoing Peoples Democratic party (PDP) administration of Governor Samuel Ortom.

Within the past week, the APC, which won the just concluded governorship election in the state, issued no less than three statements accusing Ortom and PDP of planting landmines in its path ahead of May 29. hand over.

In the latest statement by the state APC’s Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ihomun, in Makurdi, yesterday, the party wondered why a government that has failed to build a Cargo Airport in the state after two attempts in almost eight years suddenly awarded contract to build a Civil Airport in just two months to the end of its time in office.

Ihumon asked: “Why would a government, which has not been able to pay salaries and pensions, suddenly, in the twilight of its administration, suddenly begin the ill-advised promotion/appointments of selected people and recruitment of more people into the civil service?”

But the PDP, in a counter statement through its state Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, insisted: “Ortom remains the governor of the state till May 29, and there cannot, within this period, be two governors of the state.

“As governor, Ortom is empowered by law to make appointments, approve promotions, engage in contractual obligations and ensure his administration discharges its lawful duty such as the recent employment of qualified persons into the Teaching Service Board (TSB) and State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), and this is a duty the governor may perform without let or hindrance from any quarters.”
