 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Governor in shock as ISWAP insurgents kill 8 farmers in Borno

Gov. Babagana Zulum has expressed shock and sadness over the killing of eight farmers in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the killing occurred in Shuwarin, Tomsu Ngamdu, Baram Karauwa and Muna on Thursday at about 1 pm while the farmers were working on their farms.

Zulum who visited Mafa, described the attack as unfortunate.

He said the state government will partner with security agencies to deploy more soldiers to secure farmlands.

“The state government will immediately convene a Security Council meeting to come up with ways of ensuring adequate security to farmers.

“The government will also inaugurate the Agro Rangers team, comprising of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Army, the Civilian Joint Task Force and hunters to protect farmers,” he said.

He said that food Insecurity was the worst crises than Boko Haram, noting that the government would do everything to ensure that the people have access to their farmlands.

Earlier, a witness, Yarima Goni told Zulum that ISWAP terrorists who rode on motorcycles, attacked farmlands with Ak47 riffle.

Another witness, Malam Bukar Grema, told the governor that three victims of the attack were buried in Shuwarin community.

“Most of the victims had their hands tied behind them.

“We recovered their bodies at about 8:30 am on Friday and prayer was held for them at about 10:00 am,” he said.

Shereef Goni, another witness said five more victims were recovered in Tomsu Ngamdu, adding that a 15-year-old boy was speared by the insurgents.

Goni added that ten other victims were kidnapped by the terrorists during the attack.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
