 1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71 Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. He passed away on Saturday in his hometown, Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday by its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, describing the loss as part of a “day of double tragedy” following the earlier death of team captain Christian Chukwu. Bassey was part of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and managed several clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. His passing brings the number of deceased members of the 1980 squad to nine.

Two tenants, a male and a female, have abducted their neighbour's two children two weeks after moving into a room at Igbogene in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. 
 
The children, identified as Son and Success, were allegedly abducted around 6pm on June 19, 2023. 
 
It was gathered that the children were with their mother when the female neighbour came to take them out, claiming she wanted to go and buy snacks for them within the neighborhood. That was the last time they were seen. 
 
According to reports, the male tenant rented a room in the compound owned by the family of one Late Chief Edmond Osain. 
 
He said he would be staying for three months as he came to do POP work in the area. 
 
He was said to be very generous to neighbours, especially children.
 
On Sunday, June 18, a young lady visited him and he introduced her to his neighbors as his sister.
 
On Monday morning, June 19, the man left home for work, leaving his ‘sister’ behind. 
 
At about, 5pm, the man's sister told the mother of the children that she wants to buy something for the minors to eat.
 
Unaware of the woman's evil intention, the mother handed the children to the woman. 
 
She waited patiently for the woman to return with her children to no avail. 
 
By the time it became clear that something was wrong, she raised the alarm. 
 
She and other residents searched the neighbourhood but her children and the woman were nowhere to be found.
 
The male tenant who left home for work never returned.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
