 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. CHILD LABOR: OBINABO DECLARES WAR ON DEFAULTERS.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Honourable Ify Obinabo has declared war on perpetrators of child labor in the state. 

This she made known in her office in Awka after a couple Mr Patrick and Mrs Perpetual Okechukwu was reported for using their ward to hawk fruits in the market during school hours. 

Hon. Obinabo while cautioning the defaulters, said that excuses will not be tolerated for sending any child hawking during school hours and revealed that her Ministry has taken custody of the child pending when the guardians brings the biological parents of the boy. 

The couple Mr Patrick Okechukwu a commercial driver and his wife Perpetual Okechukwu a trader
 who were visibly in tears explained that they are not aware that their ward has not been going to school because he usually does his assignment alongside their seven other kids at night and it never occurred to them to go to his school and ask questions. 

Although the couple pleaded for pardon, they hinted that they have never sent any of the kids under their care to go hawking during school hours. 

The incident was reported by a good Samaritan who l saw a 10 year old boy at Sokoto RD Main Market Onitsha around 2.30pm hawking oranges for his aunty.

According to the eye witness who interacted with the boy, he looked haggard and tired and told him that he has never taken breakfast since living with the woman and only goes to school on Friday's.

On his part, the 10 year old stated that he makes between #3500 to #4000 everyday for the woman who doesn't provide him with breakfast but adequately provides for his own children.

He also stated that he hawks three times a day and if he failed to sell all the goods,she will tells him to go to market and make sure you sell all the goods.

It is based on this and other cases of abuse and child labor that the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare declared war on defaulters.
