 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Missing ex-president of ASUU, Dipo Fasina found in Turkey 


A former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who was reported missing earlier on Sunday, has been found.


Mr. Dipo Fasina, popularly known as ‘Jingo’ was declared missing on Saturday, July 1, in an incident confirmed by the incumbent President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke.


The 76-year-old Nigerian scholar and activist was travelling to Algeria at the invitation of the Algerian government when he was said to have missed his connecting flight from Istanbul, Turkey.


He was found in Turkey by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in partnership with Nigeria High Commission.


“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission in Turkey, has successfully located Prof Fasina, who went missing for a few days at Istanbul Airport while connecting on a flight back home.”


“Mr. Fasina, 76, was travelling to Algeria when he was said to have missed his connecting flight from Istanbul, Turkey.


“A big thanks to the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey who immediately sent officials to the Airport to physically locate him in the very busy and huge Istanbul Airport,” NiDCOM said in a statement on Sunday.


Mr. Dipo Fasina is a scholar and activist. He taught Philosophy for 34 years at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, after returning from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he bagged his Ph.D.


In 2001, he was elected National President of ASUU, during which he led one of the longest strikes by academics in Nigeria’s history.
