 More Nigerians expected to fall into poverty by 2027 – World Bank Despite Nigeria’s resources-rich status, more of the county’s citizens are expected to sink into poverty by 2027, the World Bank Group has said. This is contained in the World Bank’s Africa Pulse report released at the ongoing Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington DC, the United States. The report noted that sub-Saharan Africa has the highest extreme poverty rate globally, with a large share of the poor concentrated in a few countries. According to the Bretton Woods institution, about 80 percent of the world’s estimated 695 million extreme poor resided in the region in 2024, compared to 8 percent in South Asia, 2 percent in East Asia and the Pacific, 5 percent in the Middle East and North Africa, and 3 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean. “Within Sub-Saharan Africa, half of the 560 million extreme poor in 2024 resided in four countries,” the report highlight...

Stakeholders Condemn Toxic Chemicals On Tomatoes Crop

The use of toxic pesticides for pest control has generated a lot of concerns relating to public health and healthy living. 

These findings represent the collective agreement among tomato producers and processors during a regional workshop titled 'Securing Year-Round Tomato Production in South East, South-South, and South West,' which took place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

One of the Guest and Crop Management Expert, Dr Abidemi Modupe explained that the use of toxic agro chemicial in the production and preservation of crops was detrimental to the health of human beings.

Dr Modupe said tomato remained a common component of the daily diet among the people, appealed to the tomato farmers to embrace wholesome agricultural practices in the preservation of fresh produce and processing of tomato paste. 

He encouraged farmers to cultivate improved varieties of the commodity for better yields and to enable the country to meet the global standards for exportation. 

In a message to the training, the Director, Federal Department of Agriculture, Mr Abdullahi Garba represented by official from the Ministry, Mr Isah Mohammed explained that the training was aimed at building the capacity farmers in Ogun state for enhanced production of tomatoes. 

Acting Programme Manager of the State Agricultural Development Programme, OGADEP, Mrs Solape Awe applauded the Federal Government through the Ministry of Agriculture for the efforts to keep farmers abreast of development in the agricultural sector. 

Some farmers who spoke with Radio Nigeria appealed to the federal government to sustain the training programme and strengthen food production and supply chain in the country.
