SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. Election Tribunal Sacks Senator,Reps Member In Jos

The National and State Petition Election Tribunal  has sacked the Senator representing Plateau South senatorial district, Napoleon Bali and member representing Barikin Ladi/ Riyom Federal constituency, Peter Gyendeng.

The verdict which was passed at the National and State  Election Petition Tribunal  held at the State High Court on  in Jos.

The court declared former governor Simon Lalong of the All Progressive Congress (APC), and Fom Dalyop of the  Labour Party (LP) who came second in the February 25 general elections as Senator and Member respectively.

Both APC and LP candidates had asked the tribunal to nullify the election of Napoleon Bali (PDP) and Peter Gyendeng (PDP) on the ground that the PDP doesn’t have structure and therefore could not file a candidate for the governorship election; that INEC did not  comply with the new  Electoral Act and guidelines as of the time of conducting the election.

In their separate ruling at the court, Justice Omaka Elekwo and Justice Muhammad Tukur nullified the election of the two PDP candidates because of the party's  refusal to respect the order of a Jos High court to conduct ward congresses before the last general elections.

The Justices further said the evidence presented by the APC and LP candidates were relevant and admissible, adding that all the votes casted for the PDP candidates were invalid.

Similarly, Council to the Petitioners Edward Pwajok, SAN while speaking to Newsmen after the courts verdict said the court held that the nomination and sponsorship of candidate is both pre-election and post-election matter.

He however advised Nigerians to read the judgements before passing remarks and also called on the aggrieved parties to seek redress if they please.
