A bill for a law to provide for the consolidation, administration and collection of all revenue due to the State and Local Government in Anambra State, establish the relevant administrative structures and provide for related matters, have been read for the third time and passed into law by the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The member representing Ihiala I constituency, Mr. Jude Ngobili who is the Chairman, Committee on Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), said that the objective of the law is to provide for the administration and control of all revenue lines including tax and non tax revenues as stated in all regulations made under the law.

According to Ngobili, who is the Chief Whip of the 8th Assembly, the law will provide for the status of the internal revenue service as agent of a local government of the state for the administration and control of relevant revenue lines.

While speaking in an interview, Ngobili added that the law is an executive bill, aimed at blocking all loop holes in revenue generation.

"The powers of the Chairman on internal revenue is clearly stated, whose tenure will last for five years. The chairman has a well composed board with other six ministies. The commissioners will recommend head of directors/departments to represent the various ministies.

"The intention of the law is to harmonize and make revenue collection more feasible. This law will end touting. Whoever is collecting revenue without the authorization from this law is a tout.

"There must be orderliness in collection of revenue even at the local government levels. The law shall commence implementation from February 15, 2024."

After the passage of the bill, Anambra Assembly Speaker Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze commended the lawmaker for their effort, saying that their commitment is being appreciated by Ndi Anambra.

Udeze assured that the 8th Assembly will continue to deliver and will justify the reasons why they were elected to represent their constituents.
